Course Overview

This course will offer participants a deep-dive into the instructional framework of Universal Design for Learning and its application in arts learning environments. Universal Design for Learning practices will be applied to standards-aligned arts instruction. Universal Design for Learning and the Arts will require active participation but has been built to invite that engagement through learner choices that differentiate based on professional settings, readiness for advanced content, and learning styles.

Essential Questions

Throughout this course, we will consider:

  1. How does Universal Design for Learning support arts educators and special educators in their efforts to meaningfully engage students with disabilities in standards-aligned arts instruction?

  2. How does Universal Design for Learning provide opportunities for all students to become expert learners, i.e., experts in how they learn best?

  3. What are ways to leverage the principles of multiple means of engagement, multiple means of representation, and multiple means of action and expression to reach every student in the arts education setting?

Participants who satisfy all course requirements will receive a letter of completion from the Kennedy Center as evidence of 20 hours of professional development.
